Transforming communities with sustainable LRT
The Calgary Green Line LRT is the largest infrastructure investment the City of Calgary (the ‘City’) has ever undertaken, with an estimated total project value of $4.9 billion. It will contribute to Calgary’s rapid transit network. Stage 1 of the project, building the first 20 km core of the 46 km full vision, is underway.

During the planning phase of Stage 1, the importance of designing and constructing the Green Line to be a sustainable transportation project, was identified as a priority for the City. To address this objective, the City has been leveraging the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s Envision Framework to enhance the sustainability and resilience performance of the Green Line LRT. Although not a regulatory requirement, the City began using Envision in early project planning to measure, manage, and track the project’s sustainability using a third-party standard and industry best practices.
The methodology applied for this project has included sustainability workshopping, delivery of an Envision training session to City and project team members, the completion of an initial baseline of the Project against the Envision framework, the incorporation of Envision language into Project procurement documents, and the ongoing tracking, management, and reporting of project performance against Envision as it continues to move through design and into construction. Collaboration between the different disciplines including environmental, geotechnical, civil, planning, Indigenous consultation, and public participation have been critical in furthering the sustainable performance of this project under Envision.
