Green Marine Program:
Underwater Noise Level 2 Support
Belledune Port Authority
Sustainability above and below the tide
Sustainability is at the heart of operations for the Belledune Port Authority (BPA, the Port). As a growing economic driver in New Brunswick, the BPA is investing in becoming a greener port, including its participation in Green Marine.
luuceo collaborated with the Port to raise their Green Marine Underwater Noise performance indicator to Level 2. We worked with the Port to assess current performance against the Green Marine Underwater Noise performance indicator, research best practices employed by other ports, and engage with key stakeholders and rightsholders (including community members, Indigenous groups, academics, researchers, specialists, and government). And supported the Port in developing, distributing, and summarizing a community engagement survey related to the importance of marine mammals and impacts of underwater noise.
Based on the research, engagement, and information gathered, our team designed educational and communications materials for the Port to share with key stakeholders and members of the public. The materials highlight important topics such as how to report marine mammal sightings, species to look out for, the impacts of underwater noise on marine mammals, and best practices to mitigate the impacts of underwater noise on marine mammals.
What is Green Marine?
Green Marine is the leading environmental certification program for North America’s maritime industry. It is a voluntary initiative that helps its participants to improve their environmental performance beyond regulations. Green Marine targets key environmental issues related to air, water and soil quality, and community relations.
