Designing a sustainable campus
In 2014, BCIT embarked on an engagement and planning process to develop a Campus Plan that would guide the development of the Burnaby campus for the next 50 years. Key goals in this Plan include making the campus unique and more visible, creating a living campus with more amenities, and becoming a more sustainable campus through increased transportation access and use of renewable energy.

The Student Plaza project was part of BCIT’s Campus Plan and is the gateway into the campus from Willingdon Avenue. The project focused on improving the pedestrian environment and the transit hub of the campus. The gateway space supported key objectives of the BCIT campus and now provides a welcoming strong gateway statement while improving safe and convenient access to transit. Key components of the project included:
- New major weather protection canopy running diagonally through the site that integrates with three existing canopies, including the use of Indigenous art, providing cultural identity and presence on campus.
- Creation of new greenspace in place of hardscape providing comfortable gathering space for students and visitors, featuring a raingarden.
luuceo worked with the project team and organization members to use the Envision framework to improve project delivery. Throughout design, opportunities were identified based on Envision’s 64 sustainability indicators, to improve project delivery practices.
